Description of Motive

Kanevce’s house was built in the second half of the 19th century and is a classic example of traditional Ohrid architecture. The western front facade of the house attracts special attention.

The Old Town architecture of Ohrid occupies a special place in the Macedonian cultural heritage. Old Ohrid houses are widely known and recognized as part of world architecture. It is worth mentioning the fact that the great French architect La Corbusier in his “Collected Works”, in the section on the urban architecture of the Balkans and the Macedonian town house, pays special attention to its facades, porches and interior appearance.

In Ohrid has been preserved, the typical appearance of the oriental town house from the 18th and 19th centuries. The upper parts are built of wood and with many windows, and the ground part is made of stone.

The houses are original and do not have a specific typology, but their spatial organization is common to all. In winter room on the ground floor, were stored firewood, wine, brandy… The first floor was reserved for the family. Food was prepared and the family rested in those rooms. The uppermost chambers are representative and richly decorated. Guests were received in them, celebrations, baptisms and other large family events were held.

A characteristic of Ohrid are the so-called underground streets, tunnels covered by the upper floors of the houses, which expanded with the growth upwards.
