Description of Motive
Butterfly made from a traditional brooch from the late 19th century. The brooch is a top filigree work of the Ohrid craftsmens wrom the end of the 19th century.
Filigree is an ancient jewelry technique for making items from gold and silver. This technique is used to make various types of small jewelry (brooches, earrings, necklaces, bracelets …) but and larger items (buckles, crosses, frames, book covers …).
With fine wires and ribbons from silver or gold, often combined with small balls, with this technique are made most ornamental motifs. In appearance, these items are somewhat reminiscent of lace. The filigree was already known in ancient Greece, Etruria and Rome, reaches its peak from the 6th to the 12th century in Byzantium.
Passed down for centuries by many generations of skilled craftsmens, filigree as a technique is preserved and used in Macedonia to this day.
