Description of Motive
Symbol of eternity, Macedonian shield.
The symbol of eternity is symbolizes celestial life. He is both a symbol of the eternal movement of life and a symbol of infinity. In the middle there is a central point connected by six arms protruding from the point. All arms look dynamic as if moving in one direction. The symbol can be turned left or right. Due to its symbolism, it also had a protective role, so it often appeared applied on shields and helmets.
In time, the Symbol of Eternity grew into a special characteristic symbol of Ancient Macedonia. Alexander III of Macedon was the first Macedonian king to present the Symbol of Eternity on his coins.
Macedonian Shield
Macedonian shield was made of wood, leather and metal. On the outside it had a round navel – omphal. A decorative star – a rosette with lightning – was usually attached in the middle. Metal semicircular envelopes – fireplaces were nailed around in the circular zone. Numerous iron wedges were nailed in them as well as between the spaces. These iron shackles had primarily a defensive function. When the enemy struck with the sword they were protection so as not to break the shield.
