Description of Motive
Bridal jewelry, buckle from Galichnik, from end of the 19th century, Macedonia.
Buckles are a traditional decorations of the Macedonian women’s folk costume, especially as part of bridal jewelry. It is a heavy metal buckle with accentuated dimensions and specific shapes. The buckle is attached to belt made of fabric.
Local characteristics are most pronounced in decorations of the buckles. The decorations are with geometric and plant motifs, enriched with filigree accessories.
They were made of metals such as bronze, brass, and the more luxurious samples were silvered or made of silver and gold, decorated with mother-of-pearl, colored glass or pieces of semi-precious stones.
The village of Galichnik is located on the slopes of Mount Bistra in the Mala Reka area in the center of the Mijacija region in western Macedonia and is widely known for its rich cultural heritage, its authentic architecture and beautiful landscapes.
