Description of Motive
Peacock Mosaic, Episcopal Basilica, Stobi, 5th century, Macedonia
The Episcopal Basilica of Stobi is a rectangular, three-nave church built in the late 5th century. To the south of the church was a baptistery with a dome. The baptistery is paved with many magnificent mosaics. The mosaics depict scenes of peacocks, marsh birds and deer drinking water from a large jug.
The city Stobi was built in the 7th century BC and is located on the main road connecting the Danube and the Aegean Sea. The city is located at the confluence of Black River (Erigon) in Vardar (Axios), which turned it into a strategically important center for trade and warfare. During the Roman rule Stobi was the capital of the Roman province of Macedonia Saltaris. Confirmation of its economic and political importance is also the fact that the city had its own mint for making coins.
Throughout its history, Stobi was destroyed and rebuilt several times, but over time it lost its importance and economic power. The last inhabitants left the city in 1014.
Today in Stobi can be seen a amphitheater from second century, an episcopal basilica, a cruciform baptistery, a canvas workshop, numerous paths and walls decorated with mosaics, villas, baths and more. Stobi is one of the largest archaeological sites in Macedonia.
