About the Motive
The Saint Naum Ohridski icon is made according to the visual of a lithic medieval icon made at the end of the 14th century in the Church of the Holy Virgin Perivlepta (Saint Clement) in Ohrid, Macedonia.
For the Saint
Saint Naum was a distinguished student of Saints Cyril and Methodius and a close associate of Saint Kliment Ohridski. He was born in 830 and died on December 23, 910 in Ohrid.
Saint Naum, together with Saint Kliment of Ohrid, actively participated in the work of the Ohrid Literary School. More than 3,500 prepared students passed through the Ohrid Literary School, and at that time it was a center of education, better known as the “First Slavic University”. The church books that were written in the Ohrid Literary School in Cyrillic were the foundation for the spread of Orthodox Christianity in the Balkans and beyond. In 895, Saint Naum founded a monastery at the mouth of the Drim River in Lake Ohrid. He died in the monastery and was buried there in 910.
Among the Christian believers in Macedonia, especially in the Ohrid region, St. Naum Ohridski is highly respected, and because of the belief that he helps the sick and weak, the people call him the Miracle Worker.
