For the Saints
Saints Cyril and Methodius were born in Thessaloniki in the ninth century, during the Byzantine Empire. They were the first Slavic missionaries who spread Christianity and literacy among the Slavs in the Balkans, in Greater Moravia and Pannonia. For this purpose, they composed the first Slavic script – Glagolitic. Using the Old Slavic language, they wrote the first Slavic translation of the Bible in Glagolitic.
Saints Cyril and Methodius have a special merit for spreading culture and literacy among the Slavs, which is why they are called the Apostles of the Slavs.
After their death, their disciples continued their work. Their most prominent students, St. Kliment and St. Naum, stood out especially with their activity.
Saints Cyril and Methodius are revered in the Orthodox Church as saints with the title Equal to the Apostles.
