For the Saint
Saint Paraskeva, or as she is popularly known, Saint Petka, was born at the end of the 10th century, in the city of Epivat. Epivat was a city located on the Sea of Marmara, in the European part of today’s Turkey. She got her name because she was born on a Friday. Among the ancient Jews (in the pre-Christian period) Friday was a day of preparation because Saturday was a holiday. The name Paraskeva means preparation.
According to church traditions, after the death of her parents, she dedicated her life to faith in God.
Already in the 14th century, the cult of Saint Petka spread throughout the Balkan countries. Among the Slavic peoples, Sveta Petka got her name as a literal translation of the name Parskeva.
Especially among Christian believers in the Balkan countries, she is highly respected and considered a great protector.
