About the Motive

The icon of Saint Clement of Ohrid is made according to the visual of a lithic medieval icon made at the beginning of the 14th century in the church of the Church of the Holy Virgin Perivlepta (Saint Clement) in Ohrid, Macedonia.

For the Saint

Saint Clement of Ohrid is one of the first medieval Slavic saints, scientist, writer and educator. He was born around 849 and died on July 27, 916 in Ohrid.

Saint Clement was one of the most prominent students of Saints Cyril and Methodius and the founder of the Ohrid Literary School. More than 3,500 prepared students passed through the Ohrid Literary School, and at that time it was a center of education and language, better known as the “First Slavic University”. Church books that were written in the Ohrid Literary School in Cyrillic were the foundation for the spread of Orthodox Christianity in the Balkans and beyond.

In Macedonia, Saint Clement of Ohrid is revered as the protector of Macedonia, of the city of Ohrid, but also as the founder and protector of the Macedonian Orthodox Church.
