Description of Motive
Terracotta icons are one of the most exclusive finds in the history of Macedonian archeology. They were found in the Kale site in Vinica in Macedonia and due to their content and shape they are a world rarity in the field of early Christian archeology.
Vinica terracotta icon Daniel among the lions, of the 5th-6th century with an illustrative representation of Psalm 36 from the Old Testament. The saint is depicted in a tunic and barefoot. His hair is presented in small frames and touches his neck. A lions are shown on both sides of his figure. Their bodies are turned towards the edges of the icon, but their heads are directed towards the main character. The animals are depicted with strong bodies and thick mane, their bloodthirstiness is emphasized by the performance of their furious and strong jaws.
