For the Saint
Saint Demetrius was born in Thessaloniki to a rich noble family. His father was Duke of Thessaloniki. When his father died, Saint Demetrius was appointed Duke of Thessaloniki in his place.
At that time, the Roman Empire was ruled by Emperor Diocletian, who ordered the demolition of all churches and the burning of holy books, the deprivation of civil rights, honor and protection of Christians. In order to have more control, Diocletian divided the kingdom into three parts with three rulers. Maximian ruled Thessalonica and ordered Saint Demetrius to persecute and exterminate the Christians in Thessalonica, but he bravely declared himself a Christian before the emperor and defended his faith. By order of Maximian, on November 8, 306, Saint Demetrius was executed. According to the traditions of the church, his body was secretly taken by the Christians and decently buried.
The Orthodox Church considers him one of the greatest and most revered saints.
