Description of Motive

The Macedonian ancient shield was made of wood, leather and metal. On the outside he had a round navel – omphal. A decorative star – a rosette with lightning – was usually attached in the middle.

In the circular zone around were nailed metal semicircular envelopes – fireplaces. Numerous iron wedges were nailed on them as well as between the spaces. These iron shackles had primarily a defensive function. When the enemy struck with the sword they were protection so as not to break the shield.
