Description of Motive
Terracotta icons are one of the most exclusive finds in the history of Macedonian archeology. They were found in the Kale site in Vinica and due to their content and shape they are a world rarity in the field of early Christian archeology.
Vinica terracotta icon from the 5th-6th century with an illustrated representation of Psalm 65 from the Old Testament. In the rectangular frame is a representation of a strong bull with large horns. Among the bull’s horns is a wreath that adorns his head. Around the frame in which the bull figure is, there is a Latin text that reads: HOLOCAUSTA MEDULATA OFERAM TIBI CUM INCENSO ET ARIETIBUS. Psalm 65 is a solemn hymn, sung on Thanksgiving, as an ode to the various virtues of Almighty God.
