For the Saint
Saint Nicholas was born around 270, in Patara in Asia Minor. His name Nikola in translation means people’s winner. As a young man, he became a monk and after becoming a priest, after several years he was elected archbishop of the city of Mira in present-day Turkey. While he was still alive, people considered him a saint, especially because of his efforts to help the sick, the unfortunate and the weak. In his old age he fell ill and died on December 6, 343. In 1087, his relics were transferred from Myra Byzantium to Bari in today’s Italy.
The Orthodox Church considers him one of the greatest and most revered saints.
