Description of Motive
The Macedonian cross is also known as the Veljusa Cross. The Macedonian cross is a variation of the Christian cross and is mainly associated with Macedonia. It is in the form of a cross, shaped with an ornate two-member braid which is presented as an ornamental decoration.
In Macedonia, ornamentation is often present in the aesthetic decoration of Macedonian churches, church books, frescoes, icons, crosses and other objects. These are rhythmic compositions of linear-geometric images or motifs taken from nature. This style developed in the Macedonian church centers and differs from the art that developed in the Bulgarian, Serbian or Russian schools.
The cross was displayed for the first time in 1085, on the main monastery church of the Most Merciful Mother of God in the Veljusa Monastery. Veljusa Monastery is located in Macedonia, 8 kilometers west of the city of Srumica.
The monastery church was built by the monk Manuel in 1080. Originally preserved until today, the church is an excellent example of Byzantine church architecture in the Middle Ages.
In the beginning, this cross was a symbol for the monastery and the Strumica diocese, but later its use spread more and more and it became a general symbol of the Church in Macedonia.
Today it is a symbol of the Macedonian Orthodox Church.
