The Church of Saint John the Theologian Kaneo with its architecture and location is a symbol of the city of Ohrid.
The church is dedicated to Saint John the Theologian, who is the author of the Gospel according to John and was one of the twelve apostles of Christ. Apart from the saint, it was also named after the old fishing village of Kaneo, near which it is located.
Its construction began in 1365. It was built next to Lake Ohrid, on a rock that is raised above another cave church. It has a base in the form of an isosceles cross and architecturally represents a combination of Byzantine-Armenian construction.
